Special for the Record Imagine my surprise when I received a preview of a 2023 seed catalog in my inbox. I haven’t even finished putting my garden to bed to close out the 2022 season. I’m not ready to look until next spring yet. Mind you, scrolling through the sneak peek list, I saw quite a few plant seeds that would ideally be scattered around the garden right now. Yes now, despite the freezing temperatures that await just around the corner....

In an email sent late Thursday afternoon, Viamonde’s Director of Education, Michel Laverdière, advised parents and guardians that schools will be open tomorrow as usual. The note, written in French, said that even with the expected absence of custodians and other support staff, the French public school board in central and southwestern Ontario has decided it is able to welcome students to class, at least for the day Friday. The board went on to say it will make a decision over the weekend about what happens next week as the situation between education workers and the province evolves....

It is the first time Kherson — which fell to Moscow forces within days of their attack in February — has experienced such a blackout. “In Kherson and some other areas in the region, there is temporarily no electricity or water supply,” the Moscow-based city administration said on Telegram. He said it was “the result of an attack organized by the Ukrainian side on the Beryslav-Kakhovka highway that saw three concrete poles of high-voltage lines destroyed....

A team of experts commissioned by the World Health Organization to help investigate the origin of the coronavirus pandemic says further research is needed to determine how COVID-19 first started, including a more detailed analysis of the possibility that it was laboratory accident. This stance marks a sharp reversal of the UN Health Service’s initial assessment of the origin of the pandemic. The WHO concluded last year that it was “extremely unlikely” that COVID-19 had spread to people in the laboratory....

The NSC, created in 2010 under the coalition led by David Cameron and Nick Clegg, to better coordinate security policy after the disaster of the Iraq war, is now to be replaced by a broad-based Foreign and Security Policy Council (FPSC ) with eight members. The NSC brought together senior ministers with spy chiefs and the chief of the armed forces to focus on security issues and continued under Theresa May, although it met less frequently when Boris Johnson was prime minister....

Sudbury police have determined that 17-year-old Ashton Desormeaux took the lives of his parents, Brian and Janet Dessormeaux, before killing himself. All three were reportedly fatally shot at their home on Caruso Street in Coniston. Their bodies were discovered the evening of Oct. 30 after a person of interest reportedly broke a window with a propane tank to get in to check on the family. Officers were dispatched to the home at approximately 6:30 pm that evening....

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of London to demand an immediate general election amid the cost of living crisis. The ‘Britain is Broken’ protest, which took place along the Embankment on Saturday afternoon, was organized by the People’s Assembly with the support of Just Stop Oil. Former Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn and former shadow chancellor John McDonnell were among the crowds. Protesters marched in the rain from the Embankment to Trafalgar Square, where a rally was held with speakers including Mick Lynch, the general secretary of the Rail, Shipping and Transport (RMT) Union....

Some of former President Trump’s top political advisers are launching a new Super PAC known as MAGA Inc. which is expected to spend heavily over the next six weeks to support Trump-backed candidates running in November’s midterm elections. Nearly two years after his 2020 election loss, the former president remains the wildest fundraiser in the GOP, pulling in both grassroots and top-dollar contributions, and Save America’s political action committee sitting on nearly $100 million in cash ....

Meanwhile, Trump firm attorney Susan Necheles tried to isolate the former president and urged jurors not to let their views of Trump cloud their judgment. “You should not view this case as a referendum on President Trump or his policies,” he said. “It started and ended with Allen Weisselberg. Allen Weisselberg did that.” Weiselberg pleaded guilty in August to all 15 charges he faced, including tax fraud and theft. Now he will star in the expected month-long trial, where prosecutors must convince a jury that the Trump Organization....

Twitter’s mass layoffs had put a lot of pressure on employees working as foreign nationals in the United States, particularly for H-1B visa holders, according to a Forbes report. Under existing standards, they now have 60 days with their immigration status in jeopardy. Finding new work for these laid-off employees, who are in the country while holding H-1B status, is critical to maintaining their immigration status, the agency further said....

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of “energy terrorism” after Moscow’s repeated attacks on key infrastructure knocked out hundreds of thousands of people. About 450,000 households across Kyiv were without electricity on Friday as blackouts continued across the country, according to the city’s mayor, Vitalii Klitschko. “It’s one and a half times more than the last few days,” Klitschko told Telegram. It follows dire warnings of a cold and difficult winter ahead for those living in the country after weeks of Russian airstrikes and rocket attacks on Ukraine’s power grid....

Her mother told her that her 91-year-old grandmother, who is blind and in a wheelchair, was too shocked to understand what was happening. The whole family, including Zakharenkova’s father and aunt, sought refuge in a subway tunnel in their hometown of Kharkiv. While there, they found a dog living in a box and so they took him inside. “They were not prepared for any of this [war]. “So it was a big shock and a big surprise for everyone,” said Zakharenkova....

Republicans could use a majority in either house to block Democratic President Joe Biden’s agenda. “The likelihood of Republicans taking the House or Senate is pretty high, so it guarantees some form of deadlock over the next couple of years. That would probably take tax increases off the table and any kind of big spending that’s potentially perceived as inflationary off the table,” said Ross Mayfield, investment strategist at Baird....
